.hack// Legend of the Twilight is about a MMORPG (that is, a massively multiplayer online role-playing game) called The World, the most popular online game in Japan. The story is mainly about two twins Shugo and Rena who are introduced to The World after Rena wins two limited edition avatars, based on the legendary virtual heroes, the .hackers! The story follows Shugo and Rena plus various other characters that join their party as they play through The World and try to solve the mysteries that are unfolding around them. Being based on role-playing games this book is highly recommended for people who play those games but as the book is from the viewpoint of Shugo, someone who has never played role-playing games before it can easily be read by people who don’t play RPGs.

One of the great things of .hack is that because it is based of a game it has a wide range of characters, which all have different goals. For instance, there is Ouka, a werewolf whose main goal is to level up and gain more strength, or there’s Mireille, a wavemaster who hunts for rare items, and only joined Shugo’s party due to his and Rena’s rare avatars.

Another fun thing about .hack is that the fact that it is set in a game means that it has a lot of interesting events in it, and has different characters that you would find in games. For instance, the manga has various different items and creatures in it, plus monsters that they have to defeat at various levels of the game and there are also System administrators, debugging teams and the like which make it seem much more like a game.

.hack// Legend of the Twilight is a sequel to a Playstation 2 series of games, though it can easily be read on its own. It is part of a series of Anime/Manga/Video Games known as Project .hack, for more information see the series Wikipedia page at There are three volumes in the .hack// Legend of the Twilight series. The manga contains some content with some slight fanservice, but not much. The story was written by Tatsuya Hamazaki and the art was done by Rei Idumi.
