Yu-Gi-Oh! Duelist is an action/adventure fantasy manga which focuses on the character Yugi Mutou and a trading card game known as Duel Monsters which is played around the world. Yugi, a shy tenth grader had his life changed when he managed to solve a mysterious Egyptian puzzle (known as a millennium item) he inherited from his Grandfather. Possessed by the puzzle, he turns into the mysterious “King of Games” in times of need, which has come in use several times prior to when this manga is set, such as various different types of games that dark Yugi has used against villains and also defeating Duel Monster champion Seto Kaiba. In the start of the manga Maximillion J. Pegasus, creator of Duel Monsters seals Yugi’s grandfather (Sugoroku Mutou) into a video tape telling him to go to the Duelist Kingdom. The Duelist Kingdom turns out to be an island where a giant tournament of Duel Monsters was set up by Pegasus.

There is plenty of Action in Yu-Gi-Oh! Duelist, with some really good fights in the card battles using holograms of the cards' beasts. There are a great many creatures in the card game, with varied and interesting designs: fish, insects, dinosaurs, dragons, all with their own fantastical or monstrous forms.
The story widens its appeal with a host of humorous characters: Katsuya Jonouchi (Joey Wheeler in the english anime) and Ryo Bakura (has a millennium item like Yugi, though his is possessed by an evil spirit) are great examples. The manga also has some beautiful artwork in it with a quality of shading that sets it aside from the franchise's many impersonators.

Yu-Gi-Oh! Duelist is a sequel to the Manga Yu-Gi-Oh!, which has 7 volumes mainly focusing around Yugi and the King of Games, with Duel Monsters game only showing up occasionally. The first anime series is based off Yu-Gi-Oh! Duelist!. There is also a trading card game based of the one in the series called Yu-Gi-Oh! Trading Card Game.
