Ghost in the Shell Stand Alone Complex is a sci-fi crime and espionage action drama, set in the year 2030. The main character is Major Motoko Kusanagi, a cyborg who works for “section nine” - a special operations task force.

The unit also includes:
Batou - muscled cyborg with artificial eyes and ponytail,
Togusa - a transfer from the police, a classic Japanese family man,
Saito - eye-patched sniper,
Ishigawa - bearded information specialist, who operates mainly online,
Boma - chubby guy with artifical eyes; works the streets with Pazu,
Pazu - skinny, seedy looking guy; works the streets with Boma,
Chief Aramaki - white haired short old man, and the leader of Section 9.

Being set in the future, the series has a lot of futuristic technology, such as “cyberbrains”, robotic brains which can hold the data of actual brains and as such they can be transferred between bodies, be stored outside the body and can connect with other cyberbrains wirelessly, meaning people can talk to each other just by thinking. There is also active camouflage, rendering the wearer practically invisible, and the Tachikomas, robot tanks with AI that are characters within themselves, and also the stars of the special one minute shorts after every episode, Tachikomatic Days.

The story itself and of course the characters are brilliant to watch and the opening has some of the most awe inspiring CGI’s ever seen. One thing to note about the series is the way it creates a reasonable belief of the future by using things we see around us now, and advancing them, rather than creating something completely different, which definitely makes for some interesting plot points, such as hackers being able to infiltrate people’s cyberbrains to block out and replace certain things.

Ghost in the Shell Stand Alone Complex was directed by Kenji Kamiyama and licensed by Manga Entertainment. Ghost in the Shell does contain some mature themes and has some fanservice but can be watched by most people. Both the Anime and the film were based on the manga series by Masamune Shirow, and it is not needed to watch the film or read the manga before watching the Anime.
